    Snow Days
    By Kendall Muzzy
New England recently got hit with the big snow storm known as winter storm Stella. Burlington got hit with about twenty nine inches in the series of two days, marking this storm the second largest in Burlington. Snowbanks grew taller than people passing by and cars got covered in flakes. Because of all the accumulation, schools all in and around Chittenden County got canceled, including Hunt Middle School.
On March fourteenth and fifteenth, our school got canceled due to snow covering our town. It was thought that we would have school on Tuesday, March fourteenth and originally the after school programs were all that was canceled, but the school then thought otherwise as they learned more about the storm. It was announced there would be no school at Hunt the morning of the fourteenth, even though most other schools had sent out the notification the night before. After the first snow day, people expected for Wednesday to be free from school as well because of the roads being dangerous to drive on, and they were right. Students were very excited to have not one, but two days off and were excited to have so much snow again.
Kids spent their free time doing all sorts of things. Sleepovers were had, days were spent skiing and snowboarding, and hours were spent sledding. Some people liked to use their free time inside in the warmth while others were outside all day. Since there were two snow days, some people did it all. You can do all sorts of things on your days off, which is one of the reasons they are so looked forward to.
Although snow days are great, they do have their downside. Hunt has had four snow days in total this year, which exceeds the amount of snow days allowed without having more days added at the end of the year. All schools have some sort of cushion added in with the amount of schools days required by the state. If there are any unexpected school closings, that cushion prevents more days from being added to the end of the school year, but unfortunately, we have had more school closings then there are days added to the required amount. So, although snow days are fun and looked forward to, sometimes they add time at the end of the year.

    International Dinner
    By Kendall Muzzy
On Thursday, February 15th, the Oasis Team will all have an International cultural dinner. For the past couple of weeks, everyone has been working on a project in Social Studies that has to do with their ethnicity. They chose a country that they are from or that their ancestors are from and have based the last two weeks of work on that place. In this project everyone will get to experience all sorts of different cultures and learn about all sorts of traditions.
For this project, everyone is designing a placemat that represents their country. On the placemat there will be drawings of a common plant from their country, a food dish from their country and a festival or celebration from their country. Students are also writing all sorts of different poems about their country. And to wrap these assignments up, everyone will be having a big “feast” in their social studies class.
For the feast, everyone is picking one dish from their country that is based on the plant that they chose and is making and bringing in that food. Everyone will be cooking their dish at home and bringing it to school on Thursday. All the food will be homemade and delicious. There will be appetizers, entrees and desserts from many different places. There will be a huge variety of foods and everyone is looking forward to it. “I think that it is a great and fun way to learn about and experience different cultures and countries, and I am excited to try all of the food.” Explains one student.
This assignment aims to help everyone understand more about themselves, their family, and where they come from. Students will educate themselves on their background and culture. Learning about where we come from and who we are is the purpose of this project. In the end, the hope is to bring everyone together. Students will find out who they share a past with and learn about themselves.

    January Dance
    By Kendall Muzzy
On Friday, January 27, there will be a school dance hosted by sixth grade team Indigo. It will be the first dance of the new year, 2017, and has been anticipated for several weeks. There will be music, snacks and games to play there and it is a lot of fun. This is only the second dance of this school year. This is because the second dance we were supposed to have on October 14, got canceled for various reasons, making this upcoming dance the very anticipated second dance.
Because so many people were looking forward to this Friday, some were disappointed and upset to hear that the tickets to get have been raised from three to four or five dollars (five dollars if you pay at the dance, four dollars if you pay before the dance). Some people say they will no longer attend the dance because of the raised price while others don't seem to care as much. One student explained to me that they think that “it might be hard with the raised price because it might be too much money for people to pay.” Another told me that “it is only a one or two dollar difference from the original price, so I am okay with it.”
There are many different opinions and questions involving the upcoming event, but the change is happening for a reason. The dance is paid for by all of the money made from selling tickets. At the dances, there is a hired DJ playing music to dance to and the cost for the DJ has increased, making the price of the dance higher. The only way to pay for the newly raised DJ price is to raise the ticket prices.
Now that you know why the money needed for tickets has gone up for a good reason, we hope that you will decide to attend the dance and to see you there!

    Willy Wonka
    By Kendall Muzzy
Every year, Hunt Middle School puts on and performs a school wide play. This year the play will be Willy Wonka, a musical based off of the book and movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. To participate, you will need to fill out a permission slip and attend auditions on January 31st and February 1st. Anyone who wants to be involved can be and everyone who auditions will get a part in the play, but, if you are someone uninterested in being onstage, you can also help out backstage where you can help with makeup, costumes, or set.
If you do chose to be onstage, after auditions there will be rehearsals every week after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and sometimes Fridays. You will be expected to attend all rehearsals, especially the dress rehearsals nearer to the performance. If you chose to help out backstage, there will be meetings and you will be working every week after school on Wednesdays. There you will be working on the set for the play.
All of this work and commitment is in preparation for the full performance. There are a couple of showings of play. If you are interested, you are encouraged to help out, but if not, we hope to see you at the performances that so much work will have been put into and so much time put aside for. So please, go and support the students that are involved in the play and we hope that there is a great turnout for the showings.
